Quick answer

The five best countries in 2027 for Bangladeshi students going abroad with a spouse: Canada (master’s of 16 months or more and PhD; the spouse gets an open work permit), New Zealand (master’s and PhD; the partner can take any job), Germany (family reunion, usually needs A1 German), Finland (show €700 a month for the spouse, full work rights) and the USA (F-2 visa at any level, but the spouse cannot work). Since 2 October 2026 in Australia and January 2024 in the UK, most students cannot bring family; only PhD students or a few exceptions can.

Know this first: the rules changed a lot in 2026

Leaving your husband or wife behind for two years is not an option for many students. The good news is that several countries still let a spouse come with you, and in some the spouse can work full time.

But many of the lists circulating online are out of date. Australia and the UK are still called “spouse-friendly”, yet both have now all but closed the family route for most students.

Three big recent changesIn Australia, from 2 October 2026, new student visa applications cannot include family members, except for PhD students and a few exceptions. In the UK, since January 2024, only PhD or research degree students can bring family. And in Finland a bill is before parliament: if it passes, from 5 April 2027 a student’s family can apply only after the student has lived there for one year.

Country by country

Tap a country to see who qualifies, what the spouse can do and where to be careful.

  • Who qualifies: a full-time master’s (at least 16 months) at a PGWP-eligible institution, a PhD, or a professional degree such as medicine, dentistry or law. This rule applies from 21 January 2025.
  • What the spouse gets: an open work permit, meaning work for any employer. Children do not get this permit.
  • Funds: from 1 September 2026, CAD 23,448 for a student alone (≈ BDT 20.7 lakh), CAD 29,192 with one family member (≈ BDT 25.77 lakh), and CAD 6,318 more for each additional member. Tuition and travel are on top.
  • Careful: on a bachelor’s, a college diploma or a master’s under 16 months, the spouse usually does not get this permit.
  • Who qualifies: students at Level 9 or 10 (master’s, PhD), or on Level 7–8 courses on the Green List or the post-study work list.
  • What the spouse gets: a Partner of a Student Work Visa, for any lawful job anywhere in New Zealand. It usually lasts as long as the student’s visa.
  • Funds and fees: at least NZD 4,200 for the partner’s living costs (≈ BDT 2.95 lakh), and an application fee from NZD 1,630 (≈ BDT 1.15 lakh). 80% of applications are decided within 6 weeks.
  • Careful: children cannot be added to this application; they need separate visas.
  • Who qualifies: the spouse of a student holding a residence permit for study applies for a family reunion visa. Usually the student goes first and the spouse follows.
  • What the spouse gets: the right to work once the residence permit is issued.
  • Conditions: usually an A1 German certificate, housing suitable for two and enough income or money to support the family. The visa fee is €75 (≈ BDT 10,400).
  • Careful: the blocked account counts only for the student. Processing can take several months, so start A1 preparation early.
  • Who qualifies: the student’s spouse, registered partner and children under 18.
  • What the spouse gets: full rights to work and study.
  • Funds: on top of the student’s €560 a month, €700 a month for the spouse, €500 for the first child and €400 for the second. The money must be in the account when you apply.
  • 2027 warning: if the bill submitted to parliament on 10 September 2026 passes, from 5 April 2027 a student’s family can apply only after the student has lived there for one year.
  • Who qualifies: the spouse and unmarried children of an F-1 student, on F-2 visas, at any level.
  • What the spouse gets: permission to stay but not to work. They can study part time; full-time study needs a change of status to F-1.
  • Funds: the university adds each member’s costs to the I-20, and the amount varies by institution.
  • Careful: the student can also work only in a limited way while studying. The whole family’s costs must come from savings or a scholarship.

Countries where taking family is now difficult

These countries were once popular for going with a spouse. The rules have changed, so do not decide from an old list.

Australia

From 2 October 2026, new student visa applications cannot include a spouse or children. The only exceptions are PhD students (not master’s by research), fully funded foreign government scholarships, DFAT or Defence sponsorship, and Pacific or ASEAN passports. Family cannot be added after the visa is granted.

UK

Since January 2024, only students on a PhD or research-based postgraduate degree, or on a government-sponsored course of more than 6 months, can bring family. You must show £680 a month for each dependant (£845 in London), for up to 9 months.

Sweden

Families of students in higher education can still apply. You must show SEK 4,440 a month for a spouse and SEK 2,664 a month for each child. New conditions were added from June and October 2026, such as comprehensive health insurance for family members staying up to one year.

Proof of the relationship causes the most refusalsIf you apply soon after marrying, officers look closely at whether the relationship is genuine. Make sure names, dates and details match everywhere in the nikahnama, photos and communication records.

Tap each step you have finished to mark it:

  1. Choose the country and course by the spouse rulesIn Canada a master’s under 16 months does not get the spouse a work permit, so check the course length first.
  2. Build the full family budgetTuition, the student’s costs, the extra for spouse and children, rent and air tickets.
  3. Secure the student’s admissionThe offer letter and any required deposit.
  4. Decide: together or laterIn Canada and New Zealand you can apply together. In Germany the student usually goes first. In Australia, if eligible, family must be on the first application.
  5. Documents, translation and attestationEnglish translations of the nikahnama and birth certificates, notarised and attested by the ministry where required.
  6. Apply online and give biometricsForms, fees and fingerprints for each member.
  7. Travel after the decisionBuy tickets only when everyone has their visa in hand.

An honest check before you decide

  • A job for the spouse is not guaranteed: permission to work is not the same as getting a job. Be ready to live on one income for the first few months.
  • Do not fund tuition from part-time income: with family, costs rise quickly, and so does study pressure.
  • Children’s school and childcare: childcare is very expensive in many countries. Find out in advance.
  • The rules can change again: check the country’s official site one last time just before you apply. Be wary of anyone who guarantees a spouse visa.

Frequently asked questions

In which country can a spouse work most easily?

In Canada (on eligible courses), New Zealand (master’s or PhD) and Finland, a spouse can work without any employer restriction. In Germany the spouse can also work once the residence permit is issued.

Can I still take my spouse to Australia on a master’s?

Generally not for new applications made on or after 2 October 2026. The exceptions are PhD students, fully funded foreign government scholarships and a few special cases. Bangladesh is not an ASEAN or Pacific country, so that exception does not apply.

Can I take my spouse on a taught master’s in the UK?

No. On postgraduate courses starting in or after January 2024, only PhD or research-based degree students can bring family, apart from government-sponsored courses.

Can my spouse join later?

In most countries, yes, for example Canada, Germany or Finland. But in Australia family cannot be added after the visa is granted, and Finland has a proposed one-year wait from 2027.

How long after marriage should we apply?

There is usually no fixed time limit. But if the marriage is recent, keep stronger proof of the relationship: a registered nikahnama, photos, communication and evidence of family events.

Can a spouse not work at all in the USA?

The F-2 visa does not allow work. The spouse can study part time, and if they qualify separately for their own F-1 or another visa, that visa’s rules apply.
