“Is Malaysia really affordable, or is that just what the brochures say?”

It is one of the first questions Bangladeshi students and parents ask us, and it is a fair one. Malaysia has become one of the most popular study destinations for Bangladeshi students because it offers English-taught degrees, a comfortable Muslim-friendly lifestyle, a four-hour flight from Dhaka and costs that are usually far lower than the UK, Australia or Canada. But “cheaper” does not mean “cheap,” and the details make a real difference to your budget.

This guide gives you the full, honest picture: tuition and living costs, how the EMGS Student Pass works, what you can and cannot do with work, scholarships, and who Malaysia suits best.

Quick Answer: Is Malaysia a Good Choice for Bangladeshi Students?

Yes, for many students. Malaysia offers English-medium programmes at public universities, private universities and international branch campuses of UK and Australian universities, with tuition starting from around RM 10,000 a year and living costs of roughly RM 1,200 to RM 2,500 a month. It is an excellent choice if you want an affordable, internationally recognised degree close to home. It is a weaker choice if your main goal is to work and settle abroad after graduation.

Why Bangladeshi Students Choose Malaysia

  • Lower total cost. Tuition and daily expenses are generally a fraction of what you would pay in Western countries.
  • English-taught degrees. Almost all programmes at private universities and branch campuses are taught in English.
  • A foreign degree at a Malaysian price. Branch campuses of well-known UK and Australian universities let you earn the same degree as the home campus, usually for much less.
  • Strong popular subjects. Business and Management, Accounting and Finance, Engineering, IT and Computer Science, Healthcare, and Hospitality and Tourism.
  • Easy cultural adjustment. Halal food everywhere, mosques on or near most campuses, and an established Bangladeshi community.
  • Close to home. Direct flights from Dhaka take around four hours, which makes visits home affordable.
  • International recognition. Malaysia hosts over 170,000 international students, and more than 30 Malaysian universities appear in the QS World University Rankings.

Public, Private or Branch Campus: Which Should You Choose?

TypeBest forKeep in mind
Public universitiesStrong academics at the lowest tuitionFewer places and intakes for international students; competitive entry
Private universitiesFlexible intakes, wide course choice, industry linksFees vary a lot; check programme accreditation
International branch campusesA UK or Australian degree at a lower feeHighest fees in Malaysia, but still much cheaper than studying abroad at the home campus

Expert check: before you apply, confirm that your programme is accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and that the institution is approved to enrol international students through EMGS. This protects your degree recognition and your visa.

Rankings snapshot: Universiti Malaya (UM), the country’s leading public university, is ranked 58th in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2026. Branch campuses such as Monash University Malaysia and the University of Nottingham Malaysia award the same degree certificate as their home campuses in Australia and the UK.

Malaysia Intakes: When Can You Start?

Most universities offer several intakes a year, commonly around January/February, May and September, and some private institutions have even more. Intakes vary by programme, so confirm dates for your course. Start your application 3 to 4 months before your intake to allow time for the offer letter and EMGS processing.

How Much Does It Cost to Study in Malaysia from Bangladesh?

Tuition fees (approximate per year)

Public universitiesRM 10,000 to RM 30,000 (humanities lower, medicine and specialist courses higher)
Private universitiesRM 30,000 to RM 60,000
International branch campusesRM 50,000 to RM 90,000

Living costs (approximate per month)

CityMonthly budget
Kuala Lumpur and SelangorRM 1,500 to RM 2,500
Penang, Johor Bahru and smaller citiesRM 1,200 to RM 2,000

This covers shared accommodation, food, local transport and phone. Cooking at home and sharing a room can bring your costs down significantly.

One-time costs

  • EMGS Student Pass processing, medical screening, insurance and related fees: roughly RM 1,500 to RM 3,000
  • Housing deposit: often about two months’ rent plus a utilities deposit
  • Air ticket from Dhaka and initial settling-in costs

Putting it together: a careful student at a public university in Penang might spend a little over RM 35,000 a year in total, while a comfortable lifestyle at a branch campus in Kuala Lumpur can reach around RM 80,000 a year. To convert to taka, use the exchange rate on the day you plan, and keep a buffer for currency changes.

Entry Requirements

  • Academic documents: SSC and HSC (or O/A Levels) for a Bachelor’s; Bachelor’s certificate and transcript for a Master’s. Some students start with a foundation programme.
  • English proof: commonly IELTS (often around 5.5 to 6.5 depending on level and course). Many private universities accept alternatives or offer an intensive English programme.
  • Valid passport with enough validity for your studies.
  • Statement of Purpose, CV and references for postgraduate courses.
  • Extra requirements for medicine, pharmacy, engineering and similar programmes, such as specific subject grades.

Malaysia Student Pass: How the Visa Process Works

International students need a Student Pass, issued by the Immigration Department of Malaysia. Applications are handled through EMGS (Education Malaysia Global Services), and your university submits the application for you.

  1. Apply to an approved university and receive your offer letter.
  2. Submit your documents and pay the fees; your university lodges your application with EMGS.
  3. Complete any required medical screening as instructed.
  4. Receive your eVAL (electronic Visa Approval Letter).
  5. Get your single-entry visa if required for your nationality, and fly to Malaysia.
  6. Complete post-arrival medical checks and registration with your university.
  7. Receive your Student Pass, which is renewed each year for the length of your programme.

Important: keep your attendance high and your results on track. Student Pass renewal depends on you being a genuine, active student, and institutions monitor attendance closely. You can track your application status on the EMGS website, and our student visa team can guide you through each step.

EMGS Application Tracker: What Each Stage Means

You can follow your application on the EMGS website. The percentage shows where your file is:

StatusWhat is happeningTypical time
5%Waiting for your university to approve and submit your fileAbout 7 to 10 days
15%EMGS is checking your documentsAbout 1 to 4 working days
32%EMGS Approval Letter issuedAfter vetting
35%File sent to Immigration for security clearanceOften the longest stage for Bangladeshi applicants
70%eVAL (electronic Visa Approval Letter) issuedA few days after Immigration clears it

EMGS aims to issue the eVAL in around 14 working days under ideal conditions, but for Bangladeshi students the full process can realistically take up to 3 months. That is why we recommend applying at least 3 months before your intake.

Bank Balance and Documents: Avoid These Rejection Traps

Bank balance. Malaysia’s financial requirement is far lower than Western countries. As a working guide for 2026, many universities and advisors suggest showing around USD 4,000 to 5,000 for undergraduate applicants and USD 6,000 to 7,000 for postgraduate applicants. The bank statement should not be older than 30 days at submission, and a parent sponsor should provide a notarised affidavit of financial support. Your university will confirm the exact amount.

Five document mistakes that delay Bangladeshi applications:

  1. Unattested translations or certificates. Get documents legalised through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or a registered notary as instructed.
  2. Name mismatches. “Md.” on one document and “Mohammad” or “Muhammad” on another can trigger queries. Keep your name identical everywhere.
  3. No surname on the passport. Enter your full legal name exactly as the passport shows it, following your university’s guidance.
  4. Incomplete passport scans. Upload clear colour scans of every page, including blank pages.
  5. Wrong photo format. Use a 35mm x 50mm photo on a plain white background.

Also make sure your passport has at least 18 months of validity. If you do not have an approved English test, many universities place you in an English Proficiency Class (often around six months) before your degree starts.

Can You Work While Studying in Malaysia?

Only in a limited way. International students may work up to 20 hours a week, but only during semester breaks or holidays longer than seven days, in approved sectors such as restaurants, mini-markets, hotels and petrol kiosks, and with Immigration approval through their university.

In plain terms: you cannot rely on part-time work to pay tuition or monthly living costs in Malaysia. Plan to be fully funded before you go. Be very careful of anyone who suggests otherwise, because working without permission can lead to cancellation of your Student Pass.

Jobs you cannot do, even during breaks: cashier roles in any sector, and work as a singer, musician, masseur or hotel guest relations officer. Typical part-time pay is roughly RM 8 to RM 15 an hour.

What About Work After Graduation?

Malaysia does have a one-year Graduate Pass, but it is open only to graduates from a list of selected nationalities, and Bangladesh is not currently on that list. Staying on usually requires an employer to sponsor you for an employment pass, which is competitive. If staying abroad after your degree is your top priority, compare Malaysia with destinations that have a post-study work route, such as the UK’s Graduate route. If your priority is an affordable international degree, perhaps followed by a Master’s elsewhere or a career back home, Malaysia makes strong sense.

Scholarships for Bangladeshi Students in Malaysia

  • Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS): a government scholarship for outstanding Master’s and PhD applicants. It covers full tuition and a monthly living allowance.
  • University merit scholarships: many private universities and branch campuses offer tuition discounts of 10% to 50% or more based on SSC/HSC or Bachelor’s results.
  • Early-bird and sibling discounts: some universities offer these; always ask.

Ask about scholarships when you apply, not after you accept your offer, because some awards are only considered at admission.

Is Malaysia Right for You? A Quick Self-Check

Malaysia is likely a great fit if you:

  • Want a recognised degree at a lower total cost
  • Prefer English-taught programmes in a friendly, Muslim-majority setting
  • Like the idea of a branch-campus UK or Australian degree without the overseas price
  • Can be fully funded without part-time work
  • Plan to return home, move on to further study or apply for jobs internationally after graduating

You may want to compare other countries if your main goal is long-term work and settlement abroad after your degree.
