One tab shows a campus in Manchester. Another shows a visa checklist. A third shows a tuition fee in pounds that makes your heart sink a little. If that sounds familiar, you are in good company: every intake, thousands of students from Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Rajshahi and Khulna go through exactly the same thing.

This guide cuts through the noise. Below you will find what studying in the UK from Bangladesh really costs, how much bank balance you need to show, how the Student visa works step by step, what you can earn while studying, and what happens after you graduate. It is written from the questions Bangladeshi students and parents ask us most, so you can read it once, plan with confidence and share it with the family member who keeps asking, “But how much will it all cost?”

Quick Answer: Can Bangladeshi Students Study in the UK?

Yes. Bangladeshi students can study in the UK on a Student visa once they hold an unconditional offer and a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed UK university. You must also prove your English level and show enough money for your first-year tuition plus up to nine months of living costs (ยฃ1,529 a month in London or ยฃ1,171 a month elsewhere for 2026/27). Most UK Master’s degrees take just one year, which makes the total cost lower than many people expect.

Why Do So Many Bangladeshi Students Choose the UK?

  • A degree employers recognise instantly. UK universities rank among the best in the world, and a British degree carries weight with employers in Bangladesh, the Middle East and beyond.
  • Shorter courses, lower total cost. A one-year Master’s means one year of rent and living costs instead of two, and you start earning sooner.
  • Part-time work rights. Degree students can usually work part time during term and full time during official holidays.
  • A route to work after graduation. The Graduate route lets eligible students stay and work without an employer sponsor.
  • A familiar community. The UK has one of the largest Bangladeshi diasporas in the world, from London’s East End to Birmingham, Manchester and Oldham. Halal food, mosques and Bangla-speaking communities are easy to find.

UK Intakes and Your Application Timeline

The September intake is the largest and offers the most courses and scholarships. Many universities also run a January/February intake, and a few offer a smaller spring or summer start for selected programmes.

Undergraduate applications usually go through UCAS, while postgraduate applications go directly to each university. From our experience, students who start 8 to 10 months before their intake have the smoothest journey. Here is a realistic timeline for a September start:

WhenWhat to do
October to DecemberShortlist courses, check entry requirements, book IELTS, start your Statement of Purpose
December to MarchSubmit applications, apply for scholarships (many close early)
March to MayReceive offers, meet conditions, prepare for university credibility interviews
May to JuneAccept your offer, pay the deposit, arrange funds so they sit in the account for 28 days
June to JulyReceive your CAS, take the TB test, apply for your visa
AugustCollect your visa, book flights and accommodation

How Much Does It Cost to Study in the UK from Bangladesh?

Your budget has three parts: tuition, living costs and one-off pre-departure costs.

1. Tuition fees

LevelTypical yearly tuition for international students
Foundation / pathway yearOften lower than degree fees; varies by provider
Bachelor’s (arts, business, social sciences)Around ยฃ12,000 to ยฃ20,000
Bachelor’s (engineering, science, IT)Around ยฃ15,000 to ยฃ25,000
Taught Master’sAround ยฃ13,000 to ยฃ25,000
MBA, medicine and specialist coursesOften well above ยฃ25,000

These are broad ranges. Always confirm the exact fee on the university’s own course page, because fees change every year. Many universities also offer an automatic international scholarship or early-payment discount, so ask before you pay.

2. Living costs and the visa “maintenance” requirement

For the visa, the UK government wants proof that you can support yourself. For 2026/27 applications, you need to show:

Where you studyPer monthMaximum you show (9 months)
Londonยฃ1,529ยฃ13,761
Outside Londonยฃ1,171ยฃ10,539

You must add your unpaid first-year tuition on top. Example: if your fee is ยฃ16,000 and you have paid a ยฃ5,000 deposit, a student in Manchester would show ยฃ11,000 (remaining tuition) + ยฃ10,539 (living costs) = ยฃ21,539.

Cities such as Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham and Newcastle cost noticeably less than London, both for daily life and for the amount you need to show.

3. One-off costs people forget

  • Student visa application fee
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), paid upfront for the length of your visa
  • TB test at an approved clinic (required for applicants from Bangladesh)
  • IELTS or other English test fee
  • Flights, first month’s rent and accommodation deposit

Visa and IHS fees change from time to time, so check the current amounts on GOV.UK when you budget.

The 28-day rule: where most refusals start

Your money must stay in the account, never dropping below the required total, for 28 consecutive days. The closing date of your bank statement must be within 31 days of your visa application. Funds can be in your own name or a parent’s or legal guardian’s name; for a parent’s account you will also need proof of relationship (such as a birth certificate) and a consent letter. If your money is in taka, it is converted at the exchange rate on the day you apply, so keep a buffer of a few thousand pounds.

Counsellor’s tip: Never deposit large, unexplained sums just before the 28-day window starts. Visa officers can ask where the money came from. Clean, traceable funds (salary, business income, savings, sale of property with documents, or an approved education loan) are what you want.

Entry Requirements: What You Need for an Offer

  • Academic documents: SSC and HSC certificates and transcripts for a Bachelor’s; Bachelor’s certificate and transcript for a Master’s. Some universities ask Bangladeshi HSC students to take a foundation year first, depending on grades and course.
  • English proof: usually IELTS (commonly 6.0 to 6.5 overall, higher for law, medicine and some top universities). Some universities accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter or other approved tests, so ask before booking an exam.
  • Statement of Purpose: personal, specific and clearly linked to your career plan.
  • References: usually two academic or professional references for postgraduate study.
  • CV: for most Master’s and MBA programmes.
  • Valid passport covering your study period.

Study gap? A gap is not automatically a problem. What matters is that you can explain it with evidence, such as work experience, training or family responsibilities.

UK Student Visa Process from Bangladesh: Step by Step

  1. Choose your course and university based on your budget, career goal and entry requirements.
  2. Apply and receive an offer. If it is conditional, meet the conditions (for example, final results or IELTS).
  3. Pass the university’s credibility interview. Many universities interview Bangladeshi applicants before issuing a CAS to check your motivation, course knowledge and finances.
  4. Accept the offer and pay the deposit if one is required.
  5. Receive your CAS, the reference number you need for the visa.
  6. Arrange your funds and complete the 28-day period.
  7. Take your TB test at an approved clinic in Bangladesh.
  8. Apply online, pay the visa fee and IHS, and book your biometrics appointment.
  9. Attend biometrics at the visa application centre and submit your documents.
  10. Receive your decision, then check your visa dates before booking flights.

Can You Work While Studying in the UK?

Most full-time students on a degree-level course can work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full time during official university holidays. Popular jobs include retail, hospitality, warehouse work, campus roles and tutoring. Some roles, such as self-employment and professional sports, are not allowed. Your visa conditions are the final word.

Part-time work helps with daily expenses, but it rarely covers tuition. Plan your budget so you can manage even if you find work later than expected.

After Graduation: The UK Graduate Route

The Graduate route lets eligible students stay in the UK after their course to work or look for work, without needing a sponsor. Under current guidance:

  • 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026
  • 18 months if you apply from 1 January 2027
  • 3 years for PhD graduates

You must apply from inside the UK before your Student visa expires, and your university must have reported that you completed your course. From the Graduate route, many people move to a Skilled Worker visa once they find a sponsoring employer.

Can You Bring Your Spouse or Children?

For most students, no. Since January 2024, only students on postgraduate research courses (such as a PhD) or certain government-sponsored scholarships can bring dependants. If you plan to bring family, check the current GOV.UK rules before you choose a course.

UK Scholarships for Bangladeshi Students

  • Chevening Scholarships: fully funded one-year Master’s, funded by the UK government. Applications usually open around August and close in early November.
  • Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships: for students from eligible Commonwealth countries with financial need.
  • GREAT Scholarships: a ยฃ10,000 tuition award for one-year postgraduate courses at participating universities. Check whether Bangladesh is on the current year’s country list.
  • University scholarships: many universities offer ยฃ2,000 to ยฃ5,000 or more off tuition for international students, and some offer larger merit awards.

The best scholarships close months before the course starts. If funding matters to you, start the September before your intended intake.

7 Mistakes Bangladeshi Applicants Should Avoid

  1. Applying to many universities without reading their entry requirements
  2. Submitting a copy-paste Statement of Purpose
  3. Showing funds that have not completed the full 28 days
  4. Being unprepared for the university credibility interview
  5. Forgetting the TB test, IHS and other one-off costs in the budget
  6. Booking flights before the visa is approved
  7. Trusting anyone who promises a “100% visa guarantee”; no honest advisor can promise that
