Quick answer

After HSC you can enter year 1 of a bachelor’s directly (usually GPA 4.5–5.0 and IELTS 6.0–6.5), take an International Year One (around GPA 4.0–4.5 and IELTS 5.5) or start with a foundation year (IELTS about 4.5–5.5). Malaysia is the cheapest option at roughly ৳8–25 lakh for the first year including living costs, followed by Cyprus; the UK, Canada, Australia and the USA usually cost ৳40–90 lakh but offer post-study work visas of one to three years.

Three ways in after HSC

Almost every country has a door for Bangladeshi HSC students. What changes is which door: straight into the first year of a degree, a combined first year, or a foundation year first.

🎯

Direct Year 1

Start the bachelor’s straight away. Usually needs a strong HSC (often GPA 4.5–5.0) and IELTS 6.0–6.5. Fastest and cheapest overall.

🔁

International Year One

A first year with extra study-skills support that counts as year 1 of the degree. Often accepts GPA around 4.0–4.5 and IELTS 5.5. Common in the UK.

🧱

Foundation year

One preparation year before year 1. Accepts lower grades and IELTS about 4.5–5.5, but adds a year of fees and living costs.

Typical levels we see for Bangladeshi applicants. Each university sets its own rules for each programme.

Frequently asked questions

Which country is cheapest after HSC?

Malaysia is usually the most affordable, at roughly ৳8–25 lakh for the first year including living costs, followed by Cyprus. Read our Malaysia guide and Cyprus guide.

Can I study abroad without IELTS?

Sometimes. Some Malaysian and Cypriot institutions accept a medium-of-instruction letter or their own test, and US universities often accept Duolingo or TOEFL. Top universities in the UK, Canada and Australia usually still need a test score.

What GPA do I need?

Direct entry to competitive universities often needs HSC GPA 4.5–5.0. With around 4.0 you can usually choose an International Year One, and lower grades can still reach a degree through a foundation year.

Is a foundation year worth it?

It adds a year of cost, but it is the safest route if your grades or English are below direct-entry levels, and many foundations guarantee progression to a named degree if you pass.

Can I work while studying?

Yes, within limits: 20 hours a week in the UK and the USA (on campus), 24 in Canada, 25 in New Zealand, 48 a fortnight in Australia, and only during long breaks in Malaysia. Do not plan to pay tuition from part-time work.

Can I get a scholarship after HSC?

Yes. Many universities give merit scholarships of 10–50% of tuition for strong HSC and English results, and a few awards cover full costs. Apply early, because scholarship deadlines often come before admission deadlines.

Is a study gap a problem?

A 1–2 year gap is often acceptable if you can explain it with evidence such as work, courses or family reasons. Read our full guide to study gaps (in Bangla).
