Quick answer

Malaysia is one of the most affordable English-taught study destinations for Bangladeshi students. Tuition runs from about RM 10,000 a year at public universities to RM 90,000 at international branch campuses, and living costs are roughly RM 1,200–2,500 a month (about ৳36,000–76,000). Your university applies to EMGS for your student pass, which EMGS aims to decide within 14 working days. You can work up to 20 hours a week only during semester breaks longer than 7 days, and there is no general post-study work visa for Bangladeshi graduates.

Malaysia at a glance

Malaysia gives Bangladeshi students English-taught degrees, international branch campuses of UK and Australian universities, and some of the lowest total costs in Asia. A student pass is processed centrally by EMGS, usually within weeks.

Public, private or branch campus: what you get for the money

Malaysia has three kinds of university. They differ more in price, intake flexibility and degree branding than in teaching quality, so pick by budget and career plan.

Entry requirements by level

Malaysian universities set their own requirements. These are the typical levels we see for Bangladeshi applicants; your programme page is the final word.

  • Academic: SSC (or O Levels) with good grades
  • English: often IELTS 5.0–5.5, or the university’s own test
  • Length: about 1 year, then direct entry to year 1 of a degree
  • Academic: SSC with passes in relevant subjects
  • English: usually IELTS 5.0–5.5
  • Length: 2–2.5 years; some diplomas allow entry to year 2 of a degree
  • Academic: HSC (or A Levels), with subject rules for engineering, science and medicine
  • English: usually IELTS 5.5–6.0; some universities accept an English-medium letter
  • Length: 3 years for most degrees, 4 for engineering
  • Academic: a relevant bachelor’s, often CGPA 2.5–3.0 out of 4.0 or above
  • English: usually IELTS 6.0–6.5
  • Length: 1–2 years for taught master’s; research degrees need a proposal and a supervisor

Intakes: most universities take students in January/February, May and September. Private universities often run more intakes than public ones. Apply at least 3–4 months before your start date so the student pass is ready in time.

Working while you study

Malaysia’s rules are stricter than the UK’s or Canada’s, so do not plan to pay tuition from part-time work.

✅ What is allowed

  • Up to 20 hours a week, only during semester breaks or holidays longer than 7 days
  • Approved workplaces such as restaurants, petrol kiosks, minimarkets, hotels and on-campus jobs
  • Work only after your university applies for and receives immigration approval

❌ What is not allowed

  • Working during normal teaching weeks
  • Working as a cashier
  • Jobs such as singer, musician, masseur or guest relations officer
  • Any work without immigration approval, which can cost you your pass

After graduation and bringing family

  • Graduate Pass: some degree graduates can stay up to 12 months after their studies on a Graduate Pass, but eligibility depends on nationality and a Malaysian sponsor. Check the current EMGS list before you count on it.
  • Employment Pass: to work long term you need an employer to sponsor an Employment Pass. There is no general post-study work visa for Bangladeshi graduates.
  • Family: postgraduate students can apply for dependant passes for a spouse and children. Undergraduates can do so only if their nationality is on the eligible list.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to study in Malaysia?

Tuition runs from about RM 10,000 a year at public universities to RM 90,000 at some branch campuses, and living costs are about RM 1,200–2,500 a month. Many Bangladeshi students budget roughly ৳10–20 lakh for the first year at a private university.

Do I need IELTS for Malaysia?

Often, usually IELTS 5.5–6.0 for a bachelor’s and 6.0–6.5 for a master’s. Some universities accept an English-medium letter or their own English test, and foundation programmes may accept lower scores.

How long does the student pass take?

EMGS aims to process a complete application within 14 working days. Allow 4–8 weeks in total, and longer before busy intakes.

Can I work while studying in Malaysia?

Only up to 20 hours a week during semester breaks of more than 7 days, in approved jobs, and only with immigration approval through your university.

Is a Malaysian degree recognised?

Degrees from accredited Malaysian universities are widely recognised, and branch campuses award the same degree as their home university in the UK or Australia.

Not easily. Some graduates qualify for a Graduate Pass of up to 12 months depending on nationality, but long-term work needs an employer-sponsored Employment Pass.
